No cracking
A chiropractor that doesn’t crack
Dr. Ladd Carlston · Overland Park, KS
No. I don’t crack backs, and I don’t do high-velocity adjustments. If you searched for a chiropractor that doesn’t crack in Kansas City, this is the visit: I find which muscles have stopped firing, and I reset the brain-to-muscle signal directly. The office is in Overland Park, and people drive in from across the Kansas City metro.
Do you crack backs?
No. No popping, no cracking, no traditional spinal adjustments. I don’t do high-velocity adjustments.
If you’ve been avoiding chiropractors because of the “twist and crack” approach, you’ll be surprised by how different this is. My techniques are gentle and precise. Most patients tell me it’s the most comfortable chiropractic experience they’ve ever had.
What do you do instead?
Most chiropractors focus on the joint. I focus on the muscle. After 23 years, the pattern I see most is pain that won’t go away because a muscle has stopped working properly — not bones that are “out of place.” That’s why I don’t crack backs.
I use applied kinesiology to test which muscles are firing and which have shut down. Then I reset the brain-to-muscle signal directly, with neuromuscular re-education, positional release, and muscle energy technique. An adjustment moves a joint. A muscle reset starts with the testing, so the tight spot you walked in with is usually not the thing that needs fixing. No two visits look the same, because I test again each time and treat what I find that day.
How a session is put together, and the rest of the tools I use, is on the Muscle Reset Technique page.
Who it’s for, and who it isn’t
Neck pain, back pain, headaches, and shoulder pain are what I see most. I also see a lot of hip pain, knee pain, sciatica, and pain that hasn’t responded to other treatments. If a muscle is involved — and it almost always is — I can usually help. You don’t need a referral.
This is not the visit if you want your back cracked. I don’t do high-velocity adjustments.
It is also not a visit I bill to insurance. I’m a cash-pay practice. This lets me spend a full 30 minutes one-on-one with you every visit instead of rushing through a 10-minute insurance-driven appointment.
What a first visit looks like
Every session is at least 30 minutes, and it’s always just you and me. I don’t hand patients off to assistants. On the first visit I do a thorough exam to find what’s actually causing the pain, not just where it hurts. You get treated that same visit. I’ll explain what I’m finding as we go. I may send you home with a stretch or two, and we’ll talk about a realistic plan.
Most patients feel a noticeable difference after one session. Many feel significant improvement in one to three visits. I’ll give you an honest assessment at that first appointment. I’d rather fix the problem than keep you coming back.
Does it hurt? There’s no popping or cracking. Most of what I do feels like a deep stretch — patients usually say it “hurts good.” If we’re working through scar tissue or a chronic compensation pattern, it can be uncomfortable, but I’ll always communicate with you and adjust.
What it costs
Sessions are $100 for a full 30 minutes, including your first visit. No packages, no surprises. FSA and HSA cards work.
I don’t take insurance. I’ll give you a statement with appropriate coding for insurance submission. Many patients get partial reimbursement this way.

Do you crack backs?
No. No popping, no cracking, and no high-velocity adjustments. I use manual muscle testing to find which muscles have stopped firing, then reset the brain-to-muscle signal with hands-on work.
What do you do instead of an adjustment?
Most chiropractors focus on the joint. I focus on the muscle. An adjustment moves a joint. I test first, find the muscle that has shut down and the ones covering for it, and work on those. How a session goes is on the Muscle Reset Technique page.
How much is a visit, and do you take insurance?
Sessions are $100 for a full 30 minutes, including the first visit. No packages. I don't bill insurance. FSA and HSA cards are accepted, and I'll give you a statement you can submit for out-of-network reimbursement.
